Anthocyanins/chitosan films doped by nano zinc oxide for active and intelligent packaging: comparison of anthocyanins source from purple tomato or black wolfberry

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 6,   Pages 704-715 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2270-z

Abstract: The multifunctional films was prepared by blending chitosan and nano-ZnO with purple tomato anthocyanins or black wolfberry anthocyanins. The properties of films functioned by anthocyanins source and nano-ZnO content were studied. It was found purple tomato anthocyanins showed more significant color change against pH than black wolfberry anthocyanins. The nano-ZnO were widely dispersed in matrix and enhanced the compatibility of anthocyanins with chitosan. However, the anthocyanins source influenced the properties of the films more slightly than nano-ZnO addition. The tensile strength, antioxidant and antibacterial effects of the chitosan films dramatically increased after cooperated by nano-ZnO and anthocyanins, which also enhanced with increase of nano-ZnO content, whereas the elongation at break of the composite films decreased. Especially, the anthocyanin and nano-ZnO promoted the antibacterial activity of films synergistically. Composite films made from black wolfberry anthocyanins exhibited higher mechanical performance than those made from purple tomato anthocyanins but weaker antibacterial effects. The purple tomato anthocyanins/chitosan and nano-ZnO/purple tomato anthocyanins/chitosan films effectively reflected pork spoilage, changing their colors from dark green to brown, indicating the potential for applications in active and intelligent food packaging.

A novel flavonol-based colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent probe for rapid determination of hydrazine

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 1,   Pages 24-33 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2171-1

Abstract: Hydrazine is extremely toxic and causes severe harm to human body. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe 4-oxo-2-styryl-4H-chromen-3-yl thiophene-2-carboxylate (FHT) was synthesized for detecting hydrazine by using natural cinnamaldehyde as starting material. This probe exhibited significantly enhanced fluorescence response towards hydrazine over various common metal ions, anions, and amine compounds. The detection limit of probe FHT for hydrazine was as low as 0.14 μmol·L–1, significantly lower than that of the threshold value of 0.312 μmol·L–1, imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Moreover, the proposed probe was able to detect hydrazine within wide pH (5–10) and linear detection ranges (0–110 μmol·L–1). This probe was employed for determining trace hydrazine in different environmental water samples. The probe FHT-loaded filter paper strips were able to conveniently detect hydrazine of low concentration through distinct naked-eye and fluorescent color changes. Importantly, the probe FHT with low cytotoxicity was successfully applied to visualize hydrazine in living Hela cells and zebrafish.

A simple, azulene-based colorimetric probe for the detection of nitrite in water

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 1,   Pages 90-96 doi: 10.1007/s11705-019-1790-7

Abstract: We describe the synthesis and evaluation of an azulene-based chemodosimeter for nitrite. The probe was found to undergo two distinct color changes upon introduction aqueous nitrite ion. A near-instant formation of a grey color provides a qualitative indication of the presence of nitrite, followed by the formation of a deep-yellow/orange color, the endpoint from which quantitative data can be derived. The azulene probe exhibits 1:1 stoichiometry of reaction with nitrite in water, and is selective for nitrite over other anions. The azulene probe was applied to determine nitrite content in cured meat, and compared with the British Standard testing procedure (Griess test). The value obtained from the azulene-based probe agreed closely with the standard test. Our procedure only requires the preparation of one standard solution, instead of the three required for the standard Griess test.

Midline2 is overexpressed and a prognostic indicator in human breast cancer and promotes breast cancer

Lan Wang,Jueheng Wu,Jie Yuan,Xun Zhu,Hongmei Wu,Mengfeng Li

Frontiers of Medicine 2016, Volume 10, Issue 1,   Pages 41-51 doi: 10.1007/s11684-016-0429-z

Abstract:

Midline2 (MID2) is an ubiquitin-conjugating E2 enzyme linked to tumor progression and a novel interacting partner of breast cancer 1, early-onset (BRCA1). However, the role of MID2 in breast cancer remains unknown. This study investigated the expression, prognostic value, and role of MID2 in breast cancer. The expression of MID2 mRNA and protein was significantly upregulated in breast cancer tissue and established cell lines compared with that in normal breast epithelial cells and paired adjacent non-tumor tissue (P<0.001). Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that MID2 was overexpressed in 272 of 284 (95.8%) paraffin-embedded, archived breast cancer tissue. Moreover, MID2 expression increased with advanced clinical stage (P<0.001). High MID2 expression was significantly associated with advanced clinical stages and T, N, and M staging (all P<0.05). Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that high MID2 expression was an independent prognostic factor for poor overall survival in the entire cohort (93.73 vs. 172.1 months; P<0.001, log-rank test) and in subgroups with stages Tis+ I+ II and III+ IV. Furthermore, 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide colony formation, and anchorage-independent growth ability assays were conducted. Results showed that siRNA silencing of MID2 expression significantly reduced MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell proliferation in vitro and blocked the growth of MDA-MB-231 cell xenograft tumors in vivo (P<0.05). This study indicated that MID2 may be a novel prognostic marker and interventional target in breast cancer.

A review of measurement methods for peracetic acid (PAA)

Chen Cheng, Haodong Li, Jinling Wang, Hualin Wang, Xuejing Yang

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 5, doi: 10.1007/s11783-020-1266-5

Abstract: Abstract • Physical and chemical properties and application of peracetic acid solution. • Determination method of high concentration peracetic acid. • Determination method of residual peracetic acid (low concentration). Peroxyacetic acid has been widely used in food, medical, and synthetic chemical fields for the past several decades. Recently, peroxyacetic acid has gradually become an effective alternative disinfectant in wastewater disinfection and has strong redox capacity for removing micro-pollutants from drinking water. However, commercial peroxyacetic acid solutions are primarily multi-component mixtures of peroxyacetic acid, acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and water. During the process of water treatment, peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) often coexist, which limits further investigation on the properties of peroxyacetic acid. Therefore, analytical methods need to achieve a certain level of selectivity, particularly when peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide coexist. This review summarizes the measurement and detection methods of peroxyacetic acid, comparing the principle, adaptability, and relative merits of these methods.
